Built by a Man Who Refused to Stay Down

Keith Burns was homeless at 19 — Navy discharge, $40 in his pocket, tent-camping in Austin. He moved furniture, became a Merchant Marine captain, found CrossFit and MMA, and started flipping pawn shop sewing machines from his car. One day he stitched handles onto a sandbag. That moment became Brute Force Training — a brand he built from nothing into military contracts, CrossFit boxes, fire departments, and police academies across the country.

A barbell is balanced. A machine is guided. Keith knew the real world is neither. Sand shifts as you lift it — your stabilizers fire, your body adapts in real time. That’s functional strength. The kind that transfers to the mat, the job, and the fight. He didn’t just design a product. He designed a training philosophy rooted in his own survival.

The Phoenix was Keith’s personal symbol — tattooed over his scars, representing every time he rebuilt from rock bottom. After losing his brother and father to suicide in back-to-back years, Keith envisioned the Phoenix Bag as a reboot of everything he’d built. These are those bags. 1680D ballistic nylon. Seatbelt-grade webbing. Over a decade of R&D. Made in Denver, Colorado by the same hands, the same factory, the same standard Keith demanded.

01

Shifting Load Training

Sand moves inside the bag as you lift, press, carry, and throw. Your body can’t predict the load — it recruits stabilizer muscles that fixed-weight equipment never touches. Keith designed this for people who train on the go, in the field, and in the real world. Not gym-mirror strength. Survival strength.

02

8 Padded Handles, Infinite Options

Cleans, squats, presses, carries, throws, drags, ground-to-overhead. Eight padded, ergonomically placed grips — not rubber or plastic — let you grab the bag from any angle. Color-matched body, webbing, and handles for a clean look. One piece of equipment, hundreds of movements.

03

Explosive Power Builder

Sandbag training develops the kind of explosive strength that shows up in wrestling, BJJ, football, and tactical operations. The unstable load forces your body to generate power through the full range of motion — not just at the lockout.

04

Goes Where You Go

Garage gym. Backyard. Hotel parking lot. The beach. Dump it in the trunk and you’ve got a full training session anywhere. Wide-mouth zipper makes loading and unloading the filler bags fast. No rack, no bench, no gym membership, no excuses.

Training Tip

Start simple: 5 rounds of ground-to-shoulder, 10 bear-hug squats, 50-foot carry. Rest 90 seconds between rounds. That’s a 20-minute full-body session that’ll humble anyone — doesn’t matter how much you bench. Sand doesn’t care about your ego.

Does it come filled with sand?
No — it ships with filler bag(s) and a weight patch, but empty to keep shipping costs down. Grab a bag of play sand from any hardware store (about $5 for 50 lbs), fill to your desired weight, and you’re training in minutes. The wide-mouth zipper makes loading and unloading fast.
75 lb or 125 lb — which size should I get?
If you’re new to sandbag training or under 180 lbs, start with the 75. If you’re experienced, over 200 lbs, or want room to grow, go 125 — you can always under-fill it and add weight over time. Either way, the shifting sand makes even lighter loads feel heavier than you’d expect.
What’s the shell material?
1680D ballistic nylon — twice the abrasion resistance of standard 1000D Cordura. The webbing is seatbelt-grade with over 3,000 lbs of tensile strength. The bottom is a seamless one-piece double-layer panel with no seams, straps, or handles to catch or rip during drags. These bags went through over a decade of R&D and field testing before production.
What about the handles?
8 padded, ergonomically placed grips — not rubber or plastic. They’re color-matched to the bag body and webbing for a clean look. The padding matters when you’re doing high-rep cleans or carries — no hot spots, no tearing up your hands.
Can I use my own filler bags from another brand?
Yes. These bags are designed to be compatible with fillers from other leading sandbag brands. If you’re upgrading from a different bag, you can drop your existing fillers right in. Bullit’s own filler bags are also available separately if you want the best dust-free experience.
How durable is it really?
Firefighters use these daily in the firehouse with zero signs of wear. CrossFit boxes throw them around in WODs. The 1680D shell, reinforced stitching, and double-layer bottom are built to take a beating for years. Backed by a lifetime guarantee — if it breaks under normal use, it gets replaced.
What exercises can I do with it?
Cleans, presses, squats, lunges, carries (bear hug, shoulder, Zercher), ground-to-overhead, Turkish get-ups, throws, drags, rows, bear crawls, burpee combos, sprints, and dozens more. The 8 handles let you grab it from any angle for different movements. One piece of equipment, full-body training.
Is sandbag training actually effective?
Ask anyone who wrestles, does MMA, works in fire/rescue, or serves in the military. The shifting load forces your stabilizer muscles to engage constantly — you build functional, full-range strength that fixed-weight equipment can’t replicate. There’s a reason special operations units and fire departments have trained with sandbags for decades.
Can I return it?
Due to the nature of the product, all training bag sales are final. We stand behind the quality with a lifetime guarantee — if it breaks under normal use, we make it right, no questions asked.

“Have had the bag for a month now. It is used daily in a firehouse. This bag is TOUGH! Multiple handles for easy carry and lifting. The best bags I have owned.”

— Jeff M., Firefighter

“The outer shell is so thick and durable, yet flexible and non-abrasive to the skin. These things will last forever!”

— Kevin N.

“Never thought I could work out at home in a better way than the gym for such a small cost.”

— Ben C.

“We have used it for firehouse workouts of varying types. Shoulder carries, bear crawl drags, and over the shoulder drops. It is showing no signs of wear.”

— Ryan P., #JumpseatNATION

Keith Burns

The Man Behind the Phoenix

Keith Burns created these sandbags. Homeless at 19 after a Navy discharge, he bused to Austin with $40 and tent-camped by the Colorado River on tortillas and beans. He clawed his way up — furniture mover, Merchant Marine captain, pawn shop hustler — until the day he stitched handles onto a sandbag with a broken sewing machine he’d rebuilt himself. That moment became Brute Force Training.

From prototypes sewn in his car to military contracts worth half a million dollars — with Navy sailors tattooing his company logo on their chests — Keith willed an empire into existence through pure grit. He trained at a pro level in CrossFit, competed internationally, and built gear that fire departments, police academies, and special operations teams rely on to this day.

The Phoenix was Keith’s personal symbol. He tattooed it over the word “Hurt” on his wrist after losing his brother to suicide in 2018 — and his father exactly one year later. It represented every time he rose from rock bottom. After a hostile takeover of his company and years of isolation and depression, Keith envisioned the Phoenix Bag as a reboot of everything he’d built. A rebirth.

In 2023, Keith lost his battle. But his fire hasn’t gone out. These bags are his design, his standard, his legacy. Every one sold keeps his vision alive and funds the fight against the isolation that took him. 15% of every sale goes to men’s suicide awareness and veteran services.
